In the aftermath of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, orphans Bikram Bose (Ranveer Singh) and Bala Bhattacharya (Arjun Kapoor) struggle to survive. They meet Lateef (Pankaj Tripathi), who offers them food in exchange for smuggling guns. When an army officer targets one of them as a sex slave, Bikram bravely steps in to save his friend Bala. They kill the officer, becoming partners in crime. After Lateef is killed protecting them, the duo flees to Calcutta, where they work in a restaurant but face mistreatment. Desperate for money, they turn to stealing coal as a new way to survive.
